Parampara, Pratishtha, Anushasan:

The Pillars of Prayasam’s Journey Towards Social Transformation

β€œParampara, Pratishtha, Anushasan. Yeh is gurukul ke teen stambh hain. Yeh woh aadarsh hain jinse hum aapka aane waala kal banaate hain.”

This famous dialogue from the Bollywood movie Mohabbatein aptly applies to Prayasam as well. Over its 28-year journey, Prayasam’s chief mentor, Amlan Ganguly, has tirelessly worked to build the capacity of the youth he engages with.

In 2006, Amlan Ganguly, the founder of Prayasam, attended a training on Gender Diversity and Social Transformation at Visthar. After just a few sessions, Visthar’s Executive Trustee Members, Mr. David Selvaraj and Mercy Kappen, recognized his potential and offered him a job as a facilitator for the same course. This marked the transformation of a trainee into a regular facilitator at Visthar.

Founded in 1989, Visthar is a secular Civil Society Organization committed to social justice and peace. Recognizing the impact of social inequalities on the physical and mental well-being of individuals and communities, Visthar responds to issues of gender discrimination, social exclusion, and poverty.

Amlan Ganguly has always been sensitive to the issue of gender diversity. In 2008, he took the initiative to send three of his colleagues to Visthar for a month-long training on Gender Diversity and Social Transformation. Piyali Mazumdar, the ex-president of Prayasam, attended this training alongside two new entrants, Saptarshi Ray and Debasis Raha. Debasis Raha later became the Finance Director of Prayasam, while Saptarshi Ray is now the President of the organization.

In 2012, Prasanta Roy, now the Director of Hospitality and Networking at Prayasam, also underwent this training at Visthar.

Fast forward to 2023, Manish Chowdhury, the Senior Programme Officer of Prayasam, was sent to Visthar for the same training. Reflecting on his experience, Manish said, β€œTo be very frank with you, the Prayasam Ontrack Programme helped me change my mindset about gender diversity. However, the exposure to Visthar showed me how powerful a civil society organization can be and how they organize a month-long training programme. Some sessions at Visthar were mind-boggling, and these insights are helping me now as I edit films by PVB that focus on gender diversity and social transformation.”

Continuing the tradition, this year, two members of Prayasam are traveling to Visthar for the month-long training on Gender Diversity and Social Transformation. Aman Kumar Mukhiya, Senior Programme Officer, and Joyshree Roy, Junior Programme Associate, began their journey last night. Almost the entire Prayasam team gathered at Howrah Railway Station to see them off and wish them good luck.

Prayasam’s commitment to social transformation and gender diversity is not just about training and development. It’s about creating a legacyβ€”paramparaβ€”of empowerment, respectβ€”pratishthaβ€”and disciplineβ€”anushasanβ€”that will shape the future leaders of tomorrow.

"AGOL": A Glimpse into the Latest Offering from Prayasam Visual Basics

Today, an article in the Indian online newspaper "The Print" has brought the forthcoming film "AGOL" by Prayasam Visual Basics into the limelight. After watching the trailer, Deep Halder from the media house engaged with one of the film's prime characters, Devlina Ganguly, known in the film as Una, and the director, Amlan Kusum Ganguly. The interaction revealed intriguing insights into the film, its characters, and the creative vision behind it.

The Essence of "AGOL"

"AGOL" promises to be a riveting tale, exploring themes of resilience, determination, and the complexities of human relationships. The trailer has already stirred curiosity, hinting at a narrative that delves deep into the human psyche, bringing forth a story that is both relatable and profound.

Conversations with Una and the Director

In his conversation with Devlina Ganguly (Una), Deep Halder unearthed the layers of her character. Una is portrayed as a strong, independent woman navigating life's challenges. Ganguly's portrayal promises to be a standout, with her character's nuances and depth resonating with the audience.

Director Amlan Kusum Ganguly shared his vision for "AGOL," emphasizing the importance of storytelling that touches the heart and mind. He spoke about the meticulous efforts put into crafting each scene, ensuring that the film's narrative flows seamlessly while keeping the audience engaged.

Β A Nostalgic Comparison

The article also highlighted an interesting comparison made by renowned film critic Bhaswati Ghosh. Ghosh remarked that Una's character reminded her of the mother played by Aparna Sen in the 1994 Bengali film "Unishe April," directed by Rituparno Ghosh. In "Unishe April," the mother is a busy dancer striving to raise her daughter alone after her husband's death. Despite her daughter's initial disapproval and resentment toward her boyfriend, the mother remains steadfast in living her life.

This comparison sets high expectations for "AGOL," suggesting that it might evoke similar emotional depths and strong character portrayals as seen in "Unishe April."

The Anticipation Builds

With the release of "AGOL" on the horizon, anticipation is building. The film's trailer has already garnered attention, and the insights shared by Deep Halder through his interaction with Devlina Ganguly and Amlan Kusum Ganguly have only added to the excitement.

As the release date approaches, audiences are eagerly waiting to see how "AGOL" unfolds on the big screen. Will it live up to the high expectations set by its trailer and the nostalgic comparisons drawn by critics? Only time will tell. One thing is certain, though: "AGOL" is a film to watch out for, promising a captivating cinematic experience.

Exploring Climate Awareness Through Art:

A Recap of Salt Lake City Prayasam's Dance Competition

Introduction

April 27, 2024, marked a significant day in the annals of Salt Lake City, Kolkata. As the mercury soared to a blistering 43 degrees Celsius, the city grappled with an unprecedented heatwave, rendering the streets eerily empty. However, amidst this climatic turmoil, a beacon of hope emerged in the form of Salt Lake City Prayasam, an NGO committed to combating climate change. They orchestrated a remarkable eventβ€”a dance competition themed around climate change awareness, which not only showcased the power of art in addressing environmental issues but also galvanized the community into action.

The Heatwave and Its Context

The scorching heatwave that engulfed Salt Lake City, Kolkata, on April 27, 2024, sparked discussions about the underlying causes of this climatic anomaly. Global warming and climate change emerged as the primary culprits, casting a shadow over the region. Despite the gravity of the situation, the discourse on climate change remained subdued among political leaders and social workers, overshadowed by India's largest-ever election campaign, where over 70% of voters comprised youth.

Salt Lake City Prayasam's Initiative

Salt Lake City Prayasam's steadfast commitment to raising awareness and instigating action against climate change came to the fore on April 27, 2024. They organized a dance competition that served as a platform for approximately 75 youths to creatively express their concerns about environmental degradation. Participants like Nisha Bhakta and Jayashree Roy captured the audience's hearts with their poignant performances on river pollution and tree conservation, respectively. The use of light and shadow by Jayashree's team added an extra layer of depth to their performance, leaving a lasting impression on spectators.

Celebrating World Dance Day

In anticipation of World Dance Day on April 29, Salt Lake City Prayasam pre-emptively celebrated on April 27 at Kalanjali Art Space. The event was not just a competition but a celebration of creativity, community, and climate action. The competition culminated in certifying participating teams, with "Young Tarang" clinching the top spot for their exemplary portrayal of Ganges pollution, earning them a prize of 1500/-. Additionally, 19 students from Ankoor Kalanjali Art Center and 10 students from Ahalladi Kalanjali were honored for their dedication to Kuchipudi and Bollywood-style dance sessions at Kalanjali.

Acknowledging Environmental Themes in Dance

The dance competition also served as a platform to spotlight environmental themes. "Ghungroo Dance Group" secured the second position with their compelling portrayal of daily activities contributing to air pollution and the lack of accountability. Meanwhile, "Kunshalam Dance Group" took the third position, shedding light on the devastating impact of deforestation through their performance.

By harnessing the medium of dance, participants not only raised awareness about climate change but also inspired collective action and advocacy. Empowering Youth: Community Youth Hub Project Report

Community Youth Hub

Empowering Youth Voices for Change

The Community Youth Hub project, initiated in 2023, aimed to empower youth leaders from Kolkata and Roing, fostering freedom of expression and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities. Sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata in collaboration with Prayasam and Amyaa non-profit organizations, the project focused on equipping youth with essential skills and knowledge to become advocates for change within their communities.

Workshop in Roing, Arunachal Pradesh

On March 12, fifteen local youth from Roing, Arunachal Pradesh, participated in the final workshop of the Community Youth Hub project. They engaged in activities centered around photography, video creation, and editing, learning how to express their opinions effectively through social media platforms. Additionally, participants developed action plans to serve as mentors and role models for future cohorts of the Community Youth Hub.

Objectives of the Project

The primary objective of the project was to raise awareness among youth about their rights, roles, and responsibilities as citizens. By providing training in various aspects such as leadership, filmmaking, social media content development, and countering misinformation, the project aimed to empower youth to advocate for their opinions and community rights at a grassroots level.

Impact and Outcomes

Throughout the duration of the project, thirty youth leaders from Kolkata and Roing actively participated in workshops, discussions, and practical exercises. They produced a series of short films addressing critical issues such as climate change, misinformation, gender-based violence, drug abuse, and cultural heritage preservation. These films were screened at various locations to sensitize local communities and garner support for addressing these concerns.

Statement of Support

Elizabeth Lee, Director of the American Center in Kolkata, emphasized the United States' commitment to freedom of expression and democracy. She highlighted the importance of programs like the Community Youth Hub in empowering youth leaders and facilitating the peaceful expression of thoughts and opinions.

Future Aspirations

The Community Youth Hub aspires to evolve into a central platform for youth communities across the region. By continuing to empower young leaders and addressing pressing issues, the hub aims to foster positive change and contribute to the development of vibrant and inclusive communities.

Conclusion

The Community Youth Hub project has successfully empowered thirty youth leaders from Arunachal Pradesh and Kolkata, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge to advocate for their communities' rights. Through collaborative efforts and a commitment to freedom of expression, the project has laid the foundation for positive social change and community development.

About the project journey

This project tackles the absence of knowledge and understanding of freedom of speech of economically backward communities, the existing ecosystem of disinformation and yellow journalism that leaves people on the periphery of society ignorant of their rights. After extensive planning since the beginning of 2023, Prayasam formulated a feasible plan in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (U.N. SDGs) ofΒ SDG-10:Β Reduced Inequalities,Β SDG-11:Β Sustainable Cities & CommunitiesΒ andΒ SDG-16:Β Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

Between April–December 2019, The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRCI) formulated a Report titled β€˜Locating National Human Rights Commission Within The Human Rights Discourse At The Grassroots In Rural India.’ The study concluded that people at the grassroots level lack awareness about human rights, including the fundamental rights elucidated in The Indian Constitution.

It is, therefore, not a surprise that there is a sheer absence of knowledge and understanding of freedom of speech among economically backward communities. With the rise and prevalence of social media directed trends, an ecosystem of disinformation and yellow-journalism has been created in recent years that disproportionately affect marginalized people because they are unaware of their basic rights. The NHRCI clearly outlined in the above-mentioned report that β€œthe marginalized are not aware of their rights and mechanisms of redressal of their grievances.”

Given this prevailing situation, the need of the hour is to ensure a sustainable system is created and executed which makes the marginalized people to firstly understand what they do not know and to then empower them so that they can present their side of the story in front of the mainstream and bargain as equal community stakeholders.

For the Community Youth Hub which operates at the grassroots level, the content creators are from the marginalized communities who voice their rights and uphold democracy. The outcome of this project would be the Community Youth Hub acting as the central coordinating point of the other teams spread across different cities. The HUB will become independent and be able to sustain itself for the long-run. Through this project we wish to see marginalized people become the spokesperson for their problems and highlight other complex situations in their community which needed the attention all this while.

There have already been a series of workshops with the community youth & adults on their democratic and legal rights, activity-based capacity building workshops on freedom of speech & disinformation and how to utilize technology relevant to media matters so that we can reach more people. These workshops were held in Roing, Arunachal Pradesh in September-2023 and later in March-2024, a technical training phase was conducted along with a Final Exposition event which was attended by notable & accomplished persons in Arunachal Pradesh and received widespread media attention. Additionally, a workshop was also held in Kolkata during November-2023 and a similar Exposition event was held in the U.S. Consulate-General's Lincoln Room where the Director of the American Center, Ms. Elizabeth Lee, was the Guest of Honour.
The Community Youth HUB will be a means to an end whereby the local youth can foster a change in mindsets among people in their neighborhoods, their city and even their state (all of which are considered as communities). With a disciplined approach and dedication towards their work, the youngsters running the HUB will be able to positively influence policy matters at the very top through their advocacy activities and this will ultimately shine the spotlight of development on the same communities which used to be left out of the development agenda until now.
Besides the intangible benefits, there has been an observable impact of the training and exposition; for starters, the General Manager (HR) of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation has agreed toΒ set up 50 disposal binsΒ in Roing, Arunachal Pradesh after watching the HUB member's Reels on pollution and littering. Ms. Motto Mimi, Correspondent at ArunBhoomi News Channel has agreed toΒ hire some of the youth from the HUB in her news channelΒ thereby giving these long marginalised youths a job opportunity.

Furthermore, some of the guests at the Exposition event in Arunachal Pradesh have now come forward as change-agents, such as Mr. Drone Linggi from the All Idu Mishmi Student Union who has promised toΒ advocate for opening a College in Roing with the senior political leaders in the State, while Advocate Bulia Pulu has agreed toΒ help the underprivileged communities in the area with free legal advice and making them aware of their Rights & Responsibilities as Indian Citizens.

Below are the links to the media coverage that the Community Youth HUB has received (so far). As the HUB's work keeps expanding into other communities, this list will keep expanding. We thank you for taking keen interest in this unique project and we hope that one day you too can be a contributor to the Community Youth HUB!
